Radiation safety: minimise time, maximise distance, use shielding
Nuclear Structure & Radiation — AQA A-Level Physics
- Dose equivalent is measured in sieverts (Sv). It depends on the energyThe capacity to do work. Measured in joules (J). absorbed per kg and the type of radiation.
- Short-lived isotopes are preferred over long-lived ones to minimise exposure.
- Store radioactive sources in lead-lined boxes when not in use.
- Handle with long tongs to increase distance from the source.
- Wear protective clothing (lab coat, gloves, goggles).
- Limit exposure time. Monitor worker exposure using detector badges.
- Keep personal items outside the room to prevent contamination.
